Dr Suhail Anjum Tameside Hospital tribunal
Manchester, UK - A married doctor admitted to a medical tribunal that he had sex with a nurse in an operating theatre while a patient was unconscious under anaesthetic. The incident has put the doctor's career in jeopardy as he faces being struck off the medical register.
Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old consultant anaesthetist, was caught in a "compromising position" with a nurse at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester on September 16, 2023. The tribunal heard that Dr. Anjum had asked a colleague to monitor his patient mid-surgery, stating he needed a "comfort break".
[1][3]Instead, he went to a different operating theatre and engaged in sexual activity with the nurse, identified as "Nurse C". The pair were discovered by another colleague, "Nurse NT," who walked in on them and was described as being "shocked". Dr. Anjum was away from his patient for approximately eight minutes, and while no harm came to the patient, he admitted his actions had the potential to cause risk.
Dr. Anjum, who has since left his job and moved back to his native Pakistan, expressed deep remorse for his actions.
"It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame," Dr. Anjum told the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service."I let down everybody, not just my patient and myself but the trust and how it would look."
He described the incident as a "one-off error of judgment" and attributed his behavior to a "stressful time" in his personal life following the premature and traumatic birth of his youngest child.
"If my doctor had gone away without telling me ... this breaks me to pieces every day when I think about it," he added, reflecting on the betrayal of his patient's trust.
The General Medical Council's representative, Andrew Molloy, confirmed the details of the incident to the tribunal. The panel will now determine if Dr. Anjum's fitness to practise medicine has been impaired by his misconduct.
