Police in Cachar are continuing their crackdown on fake doctors, arresting two more men this week for pretending to have an MBBS degree. This comes just weeks after four other quacks were caught in the city. One of the men was arrested at a private nursing home in Ghungoor, and the other was caught at a pharmacy in Kalain.
The first man, Subir Choudhury, was caught red-handed while he was busy treating a patient inside the Kalain pharmacy. Police acted on a tip and a formal complaint from an officer at the Assam Council of Medical Registration. The Cachar SP, Numal Mahatta, told the media that Choudhury “had been illegally practising medicine for years... After verifying the complaint, we launched a raid and arrested him. Necessary legal action is being taken.”
In a separate raid, police arrested another man, Pankaj Choudhury, from a private nursing home. Officers found his stash of fake documents, including an MBBS degree supposedly from Kazakhstan and another MD certificate from a college in Kolkata. Both certificates are believed to be forgeries. These arrests once again show how serious the problem of unqualified "doctors" has become in the Barak Valley.
