Minnesota, USA: A group of eight Republican politicians in the Minnesota House have put forward a new bill that would classify life-saving COVID-19 vaccines and other advanced medical treatments as “weapons of mass destruction.” If the bill somehow passed, giving someone an mRNA vaccine would become a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
The bill’s strange language seems to be copied directly from a Florida hypnotist and conspiracy theorist who believes that mRNA shots are “biological and technological weapons of mass destruction.” This individual has also falsely claimed that “more Americans have died from mRNA injections than in WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War combined.”
While the bill has absolutely no chance of becoming law, it shows a startling position being taken by several Republican leaders. The proposed law is so broad that it would also criminalize cutting-edge cancer research and other gene therapies currently being developed at top institutions like Minnesota’s own Mayo Clinic.
