Protected Health Information of Approximately 211,000 Individuals Was Compromised
The University of Iowa Health Care and its affiliate, UI Community HomeCare, have announced a significant data breach after a hacker gained access to their network on July 3, 2025. Although the threat was quickly contained and systems were restored within a day, a forensic investigation confirmed that a cybercriminal had successfully stolen data files. The breach affected shared files between the two healthcare entities but did not compromise the main electronic medical record system.
The investigation revealed that the personal and protected health information of approximately 211,000 individuals was compromised in the incident.
The stolen data varies for each person but could include highly sensitive information such as their name, address, date of birth, medical record number, insurance details, and in some cases, Social Security numbers. Notification letters have been sent to all affected individuals.
While UI Health Care has stated that there is currently no evidence of the stolen information being misused, they are urging all affected individuals to be vigilant. They recommend closely monitoring bank accounts, credit reports, and insurance statements for any suspicious activity. In response to the breach, the organization has enhanced its security measures and system monitoring to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
