The Future of Voice Security: Pindrop CEO on Fighting AI-Powered Fraud in Healthcare

Pindrop CEO, Dr. Vijay Balasubramaniyan, discusses the rise of AI-powered voice fraud in healthcare, the findings of their 2025 report, and how they're combating deepfake technology to protect patient data.

Dr. Vijay Balasubramaniyan, Co-Founder and CEO of Pindrop, was inspired to focus on voice security after a frustrating personal experience with credit card fraud in India. This incident highlighted the significant gap between trust, finances, and voice, which fueled his PhD research and ultimately led to the creation of Pindrop. He notes that the healthcare sector presents a particularly complex threat landscape. Unlike financial institutions where fraud results in tangible monetary losses, healthcare fraud involves the theft of sensitive patient information, manipulation of medical records, and abuse of prescription systems. With the healthcare industry being the most targeted sector for data breaches and fraud costing the system an estimated US$100 billion each year, Dr. Balasubramaniyan emphasizes that "proper caller identification and authentication are paramount" to addressing these challenges.

Pindrop's 2025 Voice Intelligence and Security Report reveals a startling increase in AI-powered voice attacks, especially in the healthcare and insurance sectors. Insurance fraud alone saw a 19% year-over-year increase in 2024, with fraud now occurring in one out of every 4,359 calls.

A real-life case study of a fraud ring targeting a major US insurer demonstrated how attackers are blending persistence, insider-level knowledge, and AI-driven tactics to breach even well-protected systems. These fraudsters used multiple calls from offshore numbers to systematically test social security numbers, bypass security questions, and inquire about policy loans and annuity withdrawals. Dr. Balasubramaniyan explains that this shows they have "not only access to sensitive data but also an in-depth understanding of internal procedures."

To combat the growing threat of deepfake audio and synthetic voices, Pindrop has developed advanced voice authentication and deepfake detection technologies. Their liveness detection technology analyzes over 1,500 subtle voice characteristics in real time to differentiate between genuine human voices and machine-generated ones.

While voice analysis offers a seamless way to verify identity, especially for patients with disabilities, Dr. Balasubramaniyan acknowledges the importance of patient consent and data privacy. He stresses that healthcare organizations must be transparent about how caller profiles are used and stored. Looking to the future, he believes that the key to staying ahead of emerging threats is to enhance liveness detection, integrate cross-channel intelligence, and design voice security systems that can anticipate and outpace the next wave of AI-driven attacks.
